Once more I am astounded at how simple fact in actual fact follows fiction. One would think that it is actually the other way round, right? Well, read on because this may blow your socks off, or view the amazing video of this robot.
Remember the very first "Terminator" motion picture? Well this article may very well remind you a little of that. BigDog is a commodity of Boston Dynamics Robots, and is an unfavorable terrain robot that has the capacity to run, walk, climb and even carry large loads. It is powered by an engine that controls a hydraulic actuation system. It looks similar to a four legged animal, or at least, it has four legs and walks and runs in a very similar way as four legged animals do.
It would appear BigDog is a device that has been in the evolution phases for quite quite some time now, a few years to be particular. It is more or less the size of a large canine, hence the name about 2.5 feet tall and 3 feet long.
BigDog is a fully functioning robot with its on-board management system being in control of everything from sensors to the complete motion of the machine. The management process keeps it balanced at all times even when you try to push or kick it over, and the onboard computer will sort through the robot's path through differing topography and circumstances. It even comes with a stereo eyesight system.
At the outset BigDog operated at 4 mph, climbed uphills of up to 35 degrees and could walk across rubble, through snow, mud and water, and set a world record by venturing out continually for 12.8 miles without the need to stop. That was roughly three years ago. Today Boston Dynamics have reported that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has granted it contracts to create two new robots, one being agile and the other swift. The latter, the CHEETAH robot, will have four legs, an adaptive spine articulated head/neck and perhaps even a tail. And here's the finishing touch: It will be able to run speedier than any current robot, and faster than the swiftest human.
Very much like the African big cat it is named after, it will be able to generate quick, tight turns to either elude or follow, being able to speed up and stop faster than you can imagine. In a nutshell, its movements will seem like that of the african big cat, the Cheetah, yet it will be a fully operating robot.
These robots will reportedly be utilized for military, civil and business usages such as crisis response, firefighting advanced agriculture and more. A robot that is as fast and able to imitate the moves of the fastest land animal on earth with great accuracy and speed?
