Sadly, depression is common in our modern society. If you're unfortunate enough to be suffering from depression, here are some ways to beat depression.
1. Don't label yourself
It's very easy to wander around and attach a verbal label to yourself that says "I'm depressed". Most other people will believe you and if you're good at being depressed, they'll start to avoid you and your one-off label will become a self fulfilling prophecy.
2. Eat healthily
One of things most of us do when we're feeling down is resort to comfort food. Burgers, chocolate or other unhealthy stuff that gives a quick boost but, once the sugar rush has subsided, runs the danger of leaving you feeling more deeply depressed than before.
3. Avoid negative people
If you're depressed, there's a good chance that you'll attract more than your fair share of negative people. The trouble with this is that they can drag you further down than you were already and what was likely to be a temporary blip in your happiness turns into deeper and deeper depression.
4. Seek help
This could be your doctor, who may prescribe drugs as a solution, or it could be a friend or two who you can help get you out of your depressed mood. Long term friends are usually better at doing this than work colleagues but you'll probably know instinctively who is likely to help you and who won't take your depression as seriously as they should.
5. Have a change of scenery
This is a surprisingly simple way to help beat your depression. Quite often we'll let our local surroundings overwhelm us. Take a drive - ideally with a friend - into the countryside or a next door town or anywhere else that will give you a break from your day to day routine.
6. Lay off the alcohol
Alcohol is a known depressant. So if you're relying on it more often than you should be - and you'll know deep down whether or not this is the case - then cut down on your drinking. Make the glass of wine a spritzer or alternate alcohol with a soft drink. This is actually easy to do - no-one but you needs know that your vodka and orange juice is actually just an orange juice.
7. Learn to relax
This is another great way to beat depression. Take up some kind of relaxation, whether it's organized like a yoga class or just listening to meditation or hypnosis track.
