Herbs Work!

The "Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica" studied in schools today lists 474 herbs, including their variations. They are derived from plants, animals, insects and minerals. Herbs have the ability to enter certain channels or meridians that make up the human body. They can either warm, cool, ascend, descend, disperse, regulate, clear, tonify or sedate. They are also linked to a taste, such as bitter or sweet, and a temperature such as hot, cold or neutral. Today I introduce you to Huang Lian, which in English translates to Coptis Rhizome. This herb is grown in certain areas of China, such as Sichuan and Hubei, and harvested from October through November. A rhizome is a horizontal stem of a plant, usually found underground and shoots out roots. In Chinese Medicine school, we learn it as one of the "three yellows" (the other two are Huang Qin and Huang Bai) as these three herbs are all obviously yellow, but also are all bitter and cold. The difference lies in where they are directed to go in the body. Huang Lian Properties: Huang Lian is a bitter and cold herb that enters the following channels:

Heart

Large Intestine

Stomach

Liver

Huang Lian has many actions, a couple of which makes it one of the most effective herbs used today in Heartburn treatment. Actions: (taken from "Chinese Herbal Medicine Materia Medica", Revised Edition copyright 1993, Compiled and Translated by Dan Bensky & Andrew Gamble with Ted Kaptchuk)
