What To Do In Limassol
What To Do In Limassol

If you're looking for a family holiday location that combines sun, sea and something extra, than Limassol is the place for you With long beaches and clear blue waters, the water is shallow and clear, and very safe for kids - but there's more to Limassol than beaches! Here's my guide to what to do in Limassol, Cyprus. The beachesLadies Mile Beach is the most famous of Limasoll's beaches and is only a 10 minute drive from town centre. The sand runs on for miles and windsurfers absolutely love it here. One of the most beautiful views in Cyprus is at Curium beach, where the ancient Roman ruins overlook the sand. They have actually been rebuilt, so don't think that they have been perfectly maintained! Pissouri beach is another ten minute drive away, and is dotted with pristine white tavernas serving the local brew and the local firewater. Pissouri is a haven for divers, and if you're into that, there's a school, too.FestivalsCyprus is full of festivals all year round, partly because of the amazing weather they get at least 9 months a year. Six weeks before easter, a Carnival takes place with street parades, masked dancers and music. This festival celebrates the end of their relatively short winter and the start of spring. In September, they celebrate Dionysios, the Wine Festival. While this is not free from sponsorship, it is a centuries-old celebration that is mirrored all over the wine-growing world.Out of townIf you can hire a car, then get yourself out towards the Troodos Mountains, and the many picturesque roads in their foothills. It gets you away from the tourist hotspots and into the real Cypriot countryside, and makes your holiday all the more authentic. The coast between Larnaca and Limassol is beautiful, and coastal roads drop and dive revealing beautiful clear blue sea and white beaches. All of this, and not another tourist in sight. You will probably find quite a few tourists, but little else, in Famagusta. The Ghost Town was invaded in 1974 by the Turks, and was evacuated. Its houses, hotels, shops and tavernas all lie deserted, just as they were in 1974. It's a haunting, evocative town, still waiting for its inhabitants to come home.If you're into your castles, you don't have to go as far as the Loire Valley! Kolossi Castle is one of Cyprus' many castles, and is about 10km to the west of Limassol itself. You will even find a sugar cane factory and an aqueduct within the castle. The fleur-de-lys reveals a Knights Templar past.So - if you're in Limassol some time soon, get yourself out of town, and discover a few things that will make your holiday in Cyprus all the more authentic!
