I usually start my Sunday evenings off by watching "Sixty Minutes" and even though I don't like CBS particularly, I like the variety of topics that they have. Tonight's show has something really caught my eye. On the sixth of March "Sixty Minutes" is doing a story on wildlife in the Arctic Circle.
The CBS story is about a show that will be seen on the Animal planet in the next week called "Polar Bear: Spy On The Ice" by documentary filmmaker John Downer. He is using spy cameras in a way that not many people have thought about-to get up close and personal with wildlife to capture their habits and give us glimpses into what heretofore has been a secret life.
In the past photographers used long-range lenses for nature shows but it just doesn't give you the same perspective. They are using spy cameras in a way that gets you so close to the animals it exposes their secret world.
Bob Simon is doing the story tonight. He went with his crew to the Arctic Circle to record them making the documentary. Downer uses a spy camera disguised as a pile of snow and the other one in the water disguised as a small iceberg submerged next to a whale carcass.
The remote control cameras reveal a side to animals that is just impossible to get otherwise. It is a really unique experience to see a polar bear diving down and scrounging a whale carcass for the rest of the meat.
The spy cameras even caught new cubs coming out of their den for the first time looking at the pile a snow.
How is this relevant to you? Spy cameras are hidden inside objects that disguise them so people can't tell that they are being recorded. They reveal a hidden life, if you want to call it that, of people doing things they shouldn't be doing. Now I don't have an iceberg hidden camera or hidden camera inside a pile of ice but there are close to 30 hidden spy cameras hidden inside objects that will people see in an office, home or business setting.
Most hidden cameras have options like transmitting images in color or black-and-white and doing it with or without wires. My favorite option is to have a DVR included. You cannot record with a regular hidden camera in need a VCR to do that or a DVR.
How effective are spy cameras? If you can get that close to a polar bear in the Arctic Circle catching them in their most intimate moments feeding or introducing their young to the world it can't get much more effective than that. Certainly there is one available that can help you.
