Giovanni da Nola name was Giovanni Merliano (Nola, 1488 - Naples, 1558) was an Italian sculptor and architect who worked mainly in Naples in the sixteenth century. Besides the Spanish artists active in the early sixteenth century as Diego De Bartolomeo Ordonez Siloam and that helped to create a true school of Renaissance sculpture, Whiting was able, with Girolamo Santacroce, merge the elements of art fourteenth century with the influences from Michelangelo from Rome. Son of Joseph and Eleanor Cortese, moved to Naples as a young man where he learned the art of Peter Belverte, Bergamo artist who worked as a master carver, and with whom he worked on the decoration of the portal of the Church of the Santissima Annunziata.
