Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the Canary Islands. It is almost round in shape and is often described as a miniature continent because of the stark contrast of its landscape; the south coast is very like North Africa, while the North is heavily wooded and mountainous, rather like the Alps. The Pozo de las Nievas is the highest point at 1,918m.
Las Palmas is the Island's capital and the largest town in the archipelago. Las Palmas is one of Spain's most important ports, extending over a 12km stretch of coast. The town was founded in 1478 by the Spanish general, Juan de Rejon, who drove the surviving Guanches (the native people) from the island. In 1492 Christopher Columbus en route for the Indies, on the journey that was to lead to the discovery of America stayed on the island, as he did on his return and also on his second voyage.
At around this time work began on the Cathedral started and the Castillo Nuestra Senora de la Luz was built to protect the harbor entrance. Assaults by pirates and the attempted landing by the English under Sir Francis Drake were successfully repulsed in the 16C. During the following centuries, when most of the churches and palaces were built, there was a big economic upswing. In 1826 Las Palmas became capital of the province of Gran Canaria (which included Fuerteventura and Lanzarote)
Places of cultural interest within Las Palmas
The island offers numerous places of cultural and historical interest. The Cathedral of Santa Ana was started in Gothic style in 1497 and consecrated in 1570; Baroque conversions during the 1781 1820. Like many of the buildings on the island it is built in basalt. One of its most famous features is the portrait of Bishop Codina which is attributed to Goya.
The Casa de Colon was the house in which Christopher Colombus stayed on several occasions. The house was built at the end of the 15C in traditional Spanish colonial style. Nowadays it houses a museum with old furniture, tapestries and paintings. There are also a collection of coins, weapons and robes all said to belong to Columbus.
The Canary Island's official museum is also nearby. It is devoted to finds from the time of the Guanches, with mummies, skeletons, skulls, weapons and tools of obsidian, basalt and horn. It also contains a natural history collection.
Climate
The climate of Gran Canaria is sub-tropical, and this makes the Canary islands one of the most popular winter sun destinations. Winter daytime temperatures are typically 21-24 degrees maximum. The island is much warmer than mainland Spain in winter, but slightly cooler in the summer months.
