Lapland goes from winter to summer
Lapland goes from winter to summer

Lapland is now having warmer weather, although it is a couple of weeks ahead of time, Lapland is due to go forward into its spring season. Many of you will not have had the chance to experience Lapland in the summer and it is certainly a different place to be. There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained but it is also interesting to understand how Lapland transforms from the snowy wonderland we all know and love into a warm, summers place to be.

The ice hotel which is built from scratch every year will be closed down for the season and then nature will begin to takes its place. The ice blocks which are from the local river will simply melt away and rejoin the river where it came from.

The snow begins to melt down in the village much faster than it does on the ski slopes, in fact the skiing can go on until the beginning of May in Finland. April sees the pathways clear and although the temperatures are certainly warmer, they are still rather chilly. The one thing that is obviously apparent is the longer days. December in Lapland sees very short days with barely 3 hours light and the people of Lapland call this period, the twilight period where there is kind of a half light.

Cross country ski tracks are still open as are the ski tracks because where there is an abundance of snow, it will obviously take longer to disappear and melt but it really won't be long before Lapland's snow has bitten the dust and summer is allowed to appear.

The summer is beautiful and warm and the wildlife and activities are strong and contrary to what people believe, Lapland can experience hotter temperatures than here in the U.K. Autumn will begin to emerge however around September time when the first frosts will appear and the nights are chilly. The first snows will arrive round the beginning of November, sometimes the end of October. Experiencing the first snows in Lapland is a really magical event and the white, soft snowflakes begin to fall, thoughts of Christmas begin to emerge. The first snows very rarely stick however and it will be another couple of weeks before the snow begins to accumulate.
