Wedges have been around for some time now but they look set to stay in favour for seasons to come thanks for their comfort and versatility. Whilst stilettos give amazing height they can be tricky to walk in and sometimes painful, and though flat shoes may be comfy they don't do much to lengthen the leg. Yet wedge shoes give women the best of both worlds: show-stopping height yet with a flat, solid base that's so easy to walk on.
Think back to those physics equations you did in school pressure equals force divided by area. What this means in the world of women's shoes is that the bigger the surface area your weight (force) is spread over (e.g. a solid base in contact with the ground versus a stiletto heel), the less the pressure there will be on your poor little tootsies! So there you have it, it's mathematically proven that wedges are comfier than other high heels!
Wedge shoes can be worn on so many different occasions as they look fabulous dressed down for day or glammed up for the evening. Here are some of the styles you can find and the ways you can wear them:
Peep toe wedges
With the resurgence in popularity of cute vintage halterneck dresses and the retro fifties look, peep toe wedges (often also with a slingback) are back in demand too. Peep toe wedges look fabulous with full circle skirts and dresses or with crop skinny jeans or Capri pants for the summer. Bow trim styles or printed styles in spots, stripes or florals all complement this look beautifully. Paint your toes red and go for the lippy to match for full-on fifties glamour.
Wedge heel sandals
If you're not a fan of spindly heels but love the height, try a pair of wedge sandals for a night out instead. Not only will your feet feel so much comfier, you'll have a distinctive look that will make you stand out from the crowds. Make a statement in an eye popping colour or go for sophisticated metallics. If you prefer your shoes sky-high try a platform wedge. Platforms are built up at the front of the shoe as well, meaning the angle of your foot (and the pressure on your toes) won't be as severe as when all the height's at your heel - a comfier way to get a dramatic look.
Wedge espadrilles
Espadrilles are a light canvas shoe with a rope or jute sole. Although simple flat styles are available they are commonly found with a rope covered wedge heel and long straps that can be wound round the ankle. This casual summer style is great for emphasising slender legs and makes a great alternative to a summer sandal as they are lightweight yet secure to walk on.
Wedge heel trainers
You never thought it would happen but wedge heel trainers have burst back into fashion. A perfect shoe for summer combining a comfy canvas lace up with a cushioned rubber wedge heel, they work brilliantly with summer dresses, crop pants or skinny jeans. Try them as an alternative to your summer sandals and you may yourself learning to love them!
