Although California was sighted by Spanish navigator Juan Rodr?guez Cabrillo in 1542, its first Spanish mission (at San Diego) was not established until 1769. California became an U.S. territory in 1847 when Mexico surrendered it to John C. Fr?mont. On Jan. 24, 1848, James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, beginning the California Gold Rush and bringing settlers to the state in large numbers. By 1964, California had surpassed New York to become the most populous state. One reason for this might be that much more immigrants settle in California than any other state-more than one-third of the nation's total in 1994. Asians and Pacific Islanders led the influx.
Leading industries include agriculture, manufacturing (transportation equipment, machinery, and electronic equipment), biotechnology, aerospace-defense, and tourism. Principal natural resources consist of timber, petroleum, cement, and natural gas.
Death Valley, within the southeast, is 282 ft below sea level, the lowest point in the nation. Mt. Whitney (14,491 ft) is the highest point within the contiguous 48 states. Lassen Peak is one of two active U.S. volcanoes outside of Alaska and Hawaii; its last eruptions had been recorded in 1917.
Southern California has hiking for just about everybody. There are short trails for the beginning hiker, and long interconnected backbone trails for those seeking multi day treks. The climate ranges from cool on the coast to desert inland. You will find waterfalls and desert rock formations in different parts of the region.
The Southern California region ranges from Ventura County through San Diego, and from Los Angeles to San Bernadino counties. There's good There's great hiking in all of these areas, but for now, most of the hikes on the website are situated in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Near Los Angles, there's really great hiking within the mountains near Pasadena, and within the Santa Monica mountains.
If you're planning to sit for the California Bar Examination whenever you graduate, you must register with the California Bar by the time you graduate. University of California, Irvine School of Law students aren't eligible to register until the school receives provisional ABA approval. We are hopeful approval will be granted in spring 2011.

There's a fee for registration. At this time, there is no late fee for filing after the first 90 days of law school enrollment.
Once you have registered, please keep your registration number handy, since you will have to use it on all subsequent applications and correspondence with the California Bar.
PLEASE NOTE: You'll NOT be needed to take the "Baby Bar" exam.
