Leadership training events on the cards as 25% of managers admit misconduct

One quarter of managers has breached professional conduct rules according to a survey undertaken by the Chartered Management Institute, meaning leadership-training events may be a priority for UK businesses this year.

Results showed men to be the worst offenders with 30% of male bosses admitting to inappropriate behaviour, compared with 19% of their female counterparts.

Additionally, a huge 25% of survey participants said they had not even read their firm's official code of conduct literature.

The supermarket chain Asda has announced its plan to hold leadership-training events for ten thousand of its managers in the UK under a new scheme developed with management mentors Cirrus.

The goal, according to Simon Hayward from Cirrus, was to create a leadership training events programme that "would become ingrained in the Asda culture, ensuring that everyday leadership behaviours make a big difference to performance".

Amanda Cox, head of development and learning at the supermarket chain, said about the leadership training events plan: "The Cirrus team has worked closely in partnership with us to co-create a programme, which will have an impact on everything our leaders do every day."

News of such common unprofessionalism may seem shocking to some.

However, are the statistics really a surprise?

Paul Stevens who runs Leap Plc, a firm that offers leadership-training events, says no.

"The fact that people are admitting to their professional shortcomings is thanks to the climate of openness and constructive analysis commonly adopted by modern businesses in their leadership training events initiatives.

"The results tell us two things: firstly that this culture of unprofessional behaviour is fairly widespread, but also that nowadays bosses are prepared to admit to it, when in the past they were far less likely to be so candid." He added.
