The modern organisational team can be an extremely complex one that incorporates virtual team members, members from numerous different cultures and backgrounds, and a combination of both temporary and permanent team members. Regardless of the type of team or its make up it is important that the team operates as a single unit while each individual member is able to complete their individual roles to the benefit of themselves and the organisation.
The Modern Organisational TeamAs the role and structure of the team has changed, more businesses are finding it necessary to invest heavily in team development. Rather than an annual team building day, it is becoming commonplace to implement team development strategies that are brought into everyday working life. A single person is unable to be able to carry a business from inception through to success but a team of skilled individuals that complement one another perfectly can do exactly that.
Team Development Steps
No single individual is able to complete an entire series of tasks from beginning to end, or at least not as effectively as an organisation requires. However, effective teams draw together a diverse range of skills and behaviours to ensure that they can meet a wide range of challenges. These skills and behaviours can be developed. There are essentially four steps to team development.Introduction
The first step is the introduction and formation of the group. It is important to identify each team member's strengths, as well as areas for development. This is also an opportunity to determine the dynamics of the group.
Storming
The second stage, sometimes referred to as storming, is when team members will begin to work together and issues may crop up between individual team members. These issues may be work related or they may be cultural or geographical differences. Conflict and confrontation are normal and natural at this stage, and can be harnessed in a positive way.
Norming
The norming stage occurs when conflict and differences are resolved. Individuals get to understand one another's methods of working and engage in open and honest discussion. The team begins to gel into a single, cohesive unit and understands the strengths and weaknesses of each of its members.Performing
The final stage of team development is the performance stage. The team can operate as an holistic whole while playing to their individual strengths. Members share information and learn from each other. Not only does this stage lead to improved productivity but may also lead to new ideas for improved, ongoing development.
