Corded telephones may be a relatively simple device but it changed the way we live. We can, with this instrument, dial a few numbers and connect with someone in another state, country, or town. The name telephone comes from two Greek words meaning far voice.
The telephone basically operates by converting sound waves, most often the human voice, into electrical, or optical, signals and back to sound again at the other end. These transformed signals are then able to be transmitted through phone networks worldwide. Thus enabling communication to take place in minutes and hours rather than days or weeks.
A conventional phone system consists of a telephone line of a pair of wires that are twisted and insulated, a device (such as a beeper, light, or bell) to alert someone of an incoming call, and a means (either push button or rotary dial) of entering the numbers for outgoing calls. The wires usually handle both the signals and the audio information that are inputted into the system.
The telephone itself incorporates, in addition to the alerting device, a transmitter or microphone, a receiver or speaker, and other components used for dialing, filtering and amplification. Once the handset of a phone is picked up the phone is put into an active state. The microphone, speaker, and other audio components are connected to the line. Once a dial tone is heard then you know that the system is ready for the user to dial the number of a party they are trying to reach.
Interestingly this communication system while originally being designed for only audio transmission has been adapted to handle other data communications as well. Such as Telex, Fax and dial up internet connections. A fact which has made the telephone a virtually indispensable part of every day life whether at home or at work.
Corded telephones may not allow you a certain measure of mobility but they do also offer certain advantages certain mobile communications devices would be hard pressed to match. There is no battery that will run down in the middle of a conversation. Your neighbors cannot accidentally or intentionally monitor your call. They are lighter in weight and cost much less than a cordless phone.
