There are correct and incorrect ways of training the voice. Unfortunately, most vocal instructors have an idea of how the voice works, but not a crystal clear understanding. For you to really benefit from vocal training, the vocal excercises need to be 'correct' to be effective.
In other words, your vocal instructor must have a crystal clear understanding of how the voice works. And s/he must know which vocal exercises work. And why they work.
Too often singers are left practising, hour after hour, on ineffective vocal excercises. What a waste of time and money! And the sad thing students leave, not really knowing what they've learnt, and why it is important.
Vocal Exercises Are only Effective When:
2. You understand why you're doing the exercise. And most importantly, you know when you are doing it right.
Once you understand how the voice works, it will be much easier to improve your voice. There will be no guesswork... You will never be left thinking, "am I doing this right... is this how it's supposed to sound"?
Vocal Exercises That Can 'Trick' The Voice..
There are some special sounds, that are easy to do, that have been found to be very effective vocal excercises. In a way, they 'trick' the voice into behaving the way it's supposed to. So when you make these special sounds...
Automatically, you will...
1. Balance the air being sent to your vocal chords.
2. Engage the correct muscles for singing, while diss-engaging the muscles that would otherwise cause vocal tension.
A process has been developed to train the voice in this way. It's called 'speech level singing' and is the most effective singing method available.
This method uses very special exercises that target specific muscles inside your larynx (your voice box). As you train these muscles, your voice develops in power, increases in range (dramatically... an octave increase is not unusual), and your tone quality gets richer.
All of this happens because you are trained to use only the muscles necessary for singing. Most singers never develop to their full potential because the exercises they practice, encourage the wrong muscles to interfere with the singing process.
These incorrect muscles (the muscles you use for swallowing), will prevent the proper singing muscles from ever developing properly. This is why it's so important to practise vocal exercises that have been proven to work. Other methods may never give you the voice you want.
