Thrills and Landings around Ramsey Island

Some of the highest sea cliffs in Wales are to be found on the seaward side of Ramsey Island, off the rugged north Pembrokeshire coast bear St Davids.

Many holidays in Pembrokeshire patrons have marvelled at their splendour during one of the Ramsey Island boat trips which take the visitor right round the island on which limited numbers are also allowed to land.

Ramsey Island is run as a nature reserve by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, who have a warden there, and boat trips ply regularly from St Justinian's Lifeboat Station. Tourists enjoying holidays in Pembrokeshire can book these exciting voyages of discovery at the Thousand Islands Expeditions' Office off Cross Square, St Davids, and they can choose between sedate round trips in a traditional launch or an exciting, adrenalin-pumping white water adventure in a high speed jet boat.

The RSPB have granted Thousand Islands sole landing rights on Ramsey which teems with wildlife on its cliffs and inner fields and all around it in the waters off the Pembrokeshire coast. With a wildlife guide aboard the holidays in Pembrokeshire fraternity can learn about the creatures they see, which include perky clown-faced puffins, guillemots and razorbills, Atlantic grey seals, porpoises, basking sharks, porpoises and the occasional dolphin and even the odd killer whale.

Evening trips give those on holidays in Pembrokeshire a fascinating glimpse of

the flights of thousands of Manx shearwaters returning to their burrows on Ramsey and the other bird sanctuary islands of Skomer and Skokholm on the southern side of St Brides Bay. These oceanic birds spend their days at sea catching their marine food and outside the breeding season wandering the oceans of the world.

The holidays in Pembrokeshire boat enthusiasts can also enjoy fishing trips catching pollack, bass and mackerel in the seas around the island.

For the more adventurous, looking for a bit of excitement to lift their holidays in Pembrokeshire, there are trips out into the Irish Sea looking for dolphins, minke and fin whale and orca out in the Celtic Deep, or exploring the volcanic sea caves, bays and gorges of the island aboard the speedy water-propelled jet boats which take them into the swirling currents and white water in Ramsey Sound. The two hour trip round Ramsey and its surrounding rocks and islands in a rigid hull inflatable is a thrilling experience that will stay in the minds of visitors for life.
