In addition to applying for federal scholarship money and filling out the free FAFSA application that can make you eligible for Pell, Perkin grants and other financial aid, there are also some ways that those studying in the health professional area can get scholarship money.
One organization that is worth getting information from is HRSA as they focus on those in the health fields. This doesn't just mean nursing programs but also covers social work programs, physician assistants, dental schools, pharmacy, public health, occupational therapists, physical therapists and several other specializations.
There are three types of scholarships you can find through this organization.
One that is wonderful for those from difficult circumstances is the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students. This means to be in a family situation where the income is considered to be below the US Census bureaus measure threshold or to have had restrictions in one's upbringing environment that they specify. Tuition, living expenses and course work expenses are all considered as part of these scholarships.
A second scholarship program they offer is the National Health Service Corporation. The fields included in this include family nurse practitioner programs, nurse-midwifery departments, physician assistants and a few others you can find out about when you contact them. The program is designed for students who will provide primary health care to communities who are in dire need. Just like other scholarship programs, this provides payment of tuition and other fees, monthly stipend per year of scholarship and payment for other expenses like books, equipment and other school supplies.
Another option for those in the health professional areas is specific to nursing and is called the nursing scholarship program. These scholarships will require a two year commitment to a health care position where there is a need for nursing staff especially in areas like District of Columbia, Territory of Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia, among others. The scholarships also include stipends on top of the tuition. The health professionals is not only an area that is so needed in the community but one that is also around during rough economic times since health is a very important treasure to preserve.
