Microsoft's new Web browser, Internet Explorer 9, was downloaded over 2 million times since its release on Monday evening, according to ablog post on the Exploring IE Blog.
The post goes on to note that the rate equates to 27 downloads every second. The adoption of its new browser bodes well for Microsoft, as Google's Chrome has effectively been digging into its market share after years of Mozilla's Firefox doing the same.
IE9 matches many of Chrome's draws, particularly speed and a minimalist user interface. The Microsoft browser also adds some of its own unique tricks: graphics hardware acceleration and the ability to pin site tabs to the Windows 7 task bar. IE9 also includes the most advanced Tracking Protection feature available, allowing users to subscribe to lists of sites known to profile them for targeted marketing.
The latest version of Internet Explorer, however, only runs on Microsoft's last two operating system versionsWindows 7 and Vistain order to accomplish its hardware acceleration using those OSes' version of DirectX multimedia APIs. This restriction means IE9's ability to grow market share is limited, but Microsoft's aim is to get people onto those newer OSes.
Last January,Chrome passed the 10 percent mark in browser market share, according to numbers from Net Applications, while all versions of Internet Explorer slipped from 57 percent in December 2010 to 56 percent in January 2011. Firefox has stagnated at just under 22 percent, but that browser too, has just seen a greatly improved, faster, trimmer update with Firefox 4.0, which is scheduled to launch infinal form on March 22.
