Improving their work-life balance and being in charge are more important motivations than earning more to those thinking of starting their own business.
In addition, the proportion of people thinking about starting their own business is increasing.
These are among the key findings of a recent survey carried out for The British & International Franchise Exhibition, which takes place at Olympia, London on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 March.
The research found that, among those who have thought about running their own business, nearly half (44%) stated that the desire to achieve an improved work-life balance was the major factor in their thinking. A similar proportion (42%) were driven by the wish to be in charge and just 14% wanted to be self-employed to increase their earnings potential.
Also 97% of respondents stated they had considered becoming their own boss in the past five years up from 93% at this time last year. Furthermore, 83% of those surveyed have considered investing in a franchise as a route to working for themselves.
Adrian Goodsell, Franchise Exhibitions Manager at Venture Marketing Group, organisers of The British & International Franchise Exhibition, comments on the survey results:
"It seems the recent economic downturn has prompted many workers to consider taking their career into their own hands and starting their own business. There are many different routes and reasons to become your own boss, and it's interesting that money is so low in their list of priorities."
The survey was carried out in conjunction with EC&O Venues.
The British & International Franchise Exhibition is open from 10am each day, closing at 5pm on Friday 18 March and 4pm on Saturday 19 March 2011.
