Symptoms of Yeast Infection

It is estimated that over 75% of women suffer from vaginal yeast infection at least once in their lifetime. It is a minor problem that is cured within a couple of days for some, and some women are known to suffer from this fungus for years. It has been noticed that women who have vaginal yeast infection for years have usually not seeked medical help, neither have they tried out any proper home remedy to eradicate the fungus.

Some symptoms of vaginal yeast infection are

1. An unusual thick, odorless, whitish vaginal discharge

2. Unexplained pain during sexual intercourse

3. Uncontrollable itching and a burning sensation in the vagina and the skin surrounding the vagina (vulva).

4. Unexplained swelling of the vulva.

5. Burning sensation during urination.

If you suspect that you have vaginal yeast infection and it is the first time, it is advised that you visit your gynecologist and get it checked. It may be some more serious type of vaginal infection or vaginal inflammation such as trichomonas, or bacterial vaginosis.

Here are some things that you should try to avoid when fighting a yeast infection:

Taking birth control pills - Birth control pills weaken the immune system, making you succeptable to yeast.

Taking antibiotics - Antibiotics also weaken the immune system.

Douching - Douching can upset the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina.

Feminine deodorants - These can be very irritating to anyone, especially those with yeast infections.

Non-cotton underwear - Any underwear made of man-made fibers is not breathable, as cotton is. They trap moisture and heat, creating a perfect environment for yeast.

Clothing that is tight in the crotch - Tight clothing also creates a warm environment for yeast to grow.

Sitting in a wet bathing suit for a prolonged period - This creates not only a warm environment, but a moist one, as well. Perfect for yeast growth!

Pantyhose - Tight, man-made fiber that also allows yeast to flourish.

Foods that feed yeast - Avoid sugar, yeast, refined foods (such as white flour). See our list of food to eat and avoid when you have candida.
