Male pattern hair loss is the common type of baldness in men. Many middle aged men suffer from it. It follows a specific pattern. It starts with a receding hairline and thinning of hair along the crown. It is progressive in nature and the clinical term is androgenic alopecia (or the male pattern baldness). It is related to the hormones and genes of particular men. A similar pattern for women is also defined, the female pattern hair loss. The male pattern is common among the males of all species. It starts with the receding hairline the degree of which varies for individuals.
An understanding of life cycle of a hair strand is required here. An average male loses about 10000 strands of hair from the scalp every day, which is common, and each hair has a life period of 5 years. But when the hair that has fallen is not replaced by new ones, is when the balding starts. There is no definite age for balding to begin. Some teenagers also experience it. However if neglected, it can result in complete baldness and hence proper care should be taken initially.
The cause: It's the effect of hormones on the hair follicle that results in male pattern baldness. Genes are also responsible for baldness as some men inherit this pattern from their parents. Environmental conditions also adversely affect male pattern baldness. Pollution and chemicals speed up the process of baldness.
The signs: It all starts at the hairline. Hair recedes around the forehead laterally and forms an inverted V shape. And the existing hair in that region becomes fine (thin) and short. Gradually the hair at the top also begins to thin and then it falls. Loss of hair in patches, hair shaft breakage, redness along the region of hair loss and the pain associated may all be due to other conditions of hair loss.
The tests: Diagnosis can be based simply on appearance and analyzing the pattern. For other types of hair loss clinical tests may have to be performed (clinical tests is of great help to understand the environmental aspect).
The psyche: Psychological impact of men with hair loss is profound. There will always be a constant worry about the receding hairline. And in some cases there will be a loss of confidence and esteem too. And this stress aids and abets the hair loss process. One thing to understand here is that male pattern baldness has no cure, accept that, and kick the stress out.
The treatment: As soon as you observe a receding hairline, consult an expert. Male pattern baldness cannot be completely stopped, but at least the process can be alleviated. One common medicine used is a solution of Minoxidil, which when applied to the scalp stimulates hair growth and the result can be seen in 6-7 months. But some men may suffer from irritation and itching which are the side effects of Minoxidil. The experts may also suggest about ideal hair wash techniques to wash away the pollutants and harmful toxins present in the atmosphere.
Male pattern baldness has to be detected early and the treatment should begin as early as possible to control it.
