The one thing that is inexpensive, colourful and brings a lot of cheer is seasonal blooms. January to March are ideal months to see a full range of seasonal flowers until April or when it gets too hot for plants to bloom. Choose from Cosmos, Sweet William, Petunia, Marigold, Zinnia, Balsam see your seedlings germinate and unfurl in a riot of colours. Here are a few tips for three easy going varieties but if you rather procure budding saplings than dig the earth, head to the local garden store, or even easier-buy flowers online.

Cosmos

Great for a novice. Start in early January. Fill seed tray three-fourths with soil, put some needle like seed in each cup and cover with half centimetre earth. Cosmos need hot dry conditions so ensure there is no water logging. The plants grow up to four feet and flower in few weeks. Once the sapling is strong, transplant to pots or flowerbeds. The blossoms are delicate and come in white, pink and purple shades.

Tulips

Tulips are one of the most refreshing, most popular and easiest flowers to grow. They thrive in full sun. They last longest if bulbs are properly cultivated. Ensure that the drainage is good. To improve drainage, add sand and compost. Sow them at a depth of one foot and set the bulbs pointed-end-up about four to six inches deep. Cut tulips last about a week in a vase. You must add a little sugar to the potted water; this prolongs the life of tulip bouquet.

Petunia

They do best in full sun. They are very slow to grow from seed and need light and warmth to germinate. So, it's important not to cover the kernels. Sprinkle them on top of the soil and make sure that the earth is well-drained, as too much water results in fewer flowers. Wait till plants are twelve weeks old before transferring them to pots. Although petunias like cool weather, they are not frost tolerant.
