The Tranz Scenic Overlander is a good way to see an expansive view of New Zealand in a short amount of time. If Wellington is your base of stay for a great length of time, you might want to consider heading off to Auckland on The Overlander for a few days. Though the railway station is closed on some major holidays, it is otherwise operational 7 days of the week. The journey is a full 12 hours, but the views and people that you will meet and see along the way are worth it. There are also a number of shorter trips for you to take to outlying cities. The best thing to do is to take a day trip out in the city and check out the Wellington railway station's natural beauty then head to the information desk, where you will find some very friendly railway staff to help you plan your outward journey.
While you're out for the day planning a trip to Auckland, be sure to head over to the Bolton Street Memorial Park. With lush greenery and solidly planted trees, this park offers amazing beauty as well as a look into Wellington's history. Another beautiful scene in Wellington is the Wellington Botanic Park, which offers over 26 hectares of space to walk, run, and play. The spectacular garden also boats a whopping 300 array of specially grown rose species. This is the perfect place to take stroll with a loved one or bring the entire family to enjoy the joyful weather of the New Zealand coastline. It is also an excellent place to bring a book and chill out with some wine from the local winery along with some of Wellington's fine restaurant cuisine.
If you prefer to brave the wind, then try making a trip to the Wellington waterfront. The local original theatre is located here as are a number of key business institutions. The area offers views of the Cook Straight as well as a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
