How to bet on a horse!

Being successful at horse wagering/betting requires the ability to evaluate as much information about a horse and weigh the probabilities of how the horse would finish the race - whether first, second or third positions.

Though luck may, at times go against you, losses balance out in the long run. Being a consistent winner in horse wagering is not solely about luck. It's about the bettor's willingness to invest the time and determination to become familiar with the horses he wants to wager on, whether he can weigh all the factors in a cool, objective manner, and whether he adopts a consistent disciplined approach to horse wagering.

The best way to learn about the horse wagering/betting is to go ahead and have fun with a few small wagers to begin and play around with. Follow these straightforward guidelines and soon after you will progress your own horse wagering system - with a decent chance of making a profit!

Firstly: Pick Your Horse

Get the official horse race program at your favourite track. Learning to evaluate all the information in a race card can be a complicated process. There are no inherently "correct" ways to handicap horses and lifelong racing fans say they learn something new every day.

Secondly: Place Your Wager

For your first bet, it is advisable to make a show bet. The minimum wager is usually ?2 and you'll be holding a winning ticket if your horse finishes first, second or third.

When you're ready to place your bet, go to any of the horse racing track's betting window's and tell to the teller the amount you want to wager, the type of wager you want to make and the number of the horse you want to wager on.

For example, to place a ?2 show wager on horse number 2, you'll say "Two Pounds to Show, Number 2".

In return for your ?2, the teller will issue a "tote ticket" with details of your wager on it. Before you leave the window, check to be sure your ticket is correct.

Thirdly: Cheer Your Horse Home!

The horses go around the track depending on the race distance and finish at "the wire" in front of the clubhouse or the main grandstand. As the race begins, look for your horse and listen to the announcer's call. When your chosen horse reaches the home stretch, it's time to give him some audible support! Shout, cheer, whistle, stamp - whatever it takes to get him to finish first, second or third in the race.

Following the finish, check the results of the race - they'll be announced, posted on the infield "tote board" and displayed on the video monitors. Within a few moments, the race will be made "official" and payoff prices will be issued. If your horse is officially one of the first three finishers, take your ticket to any teller to collect your monies.

This information is based on horse betting at a racetrack- of course it is now very easy to bet online, from the comfort of your own home.
