Cell Phones and Manners! We have reached a point in life where cell phones are not a negotiable option. If you don't have a cell phone you are frowned upon why in earths name would you NOT have a cell phone? But in these times where life is ruled by a little pocket device that has undoubtably brought many great aspects into our daily functioning, it is important to not forget your manners!
What could I possibly mean? Here are 3 points on how to use your cell phone and still keep your manners!
1) When you are spending time with someone special to you, out of respect, you should turn your phone to silent. No matter what the call is that is coming in you have voice mail, you have sms, you have a few options for the person trying to contact you to leave a message and you can get back to them once you are finished doing what you are busy with at the time. Don't underestimate the value of being in the now with the people you are with. Work can wait an hour or two, your friend contacting you about a weekend party can also wait. It doesn't matter who you are spending your time with; your family, friends, colleagues it is important to give all of yourself to the moment .
2) In a similar light, even though you can chat on your phone on mixit or facebook or any of the other hundred available applications, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Why not rather get up off that couch, use your legs and visit real people in real life instead of your cell phone and the voices that come out of it being your only company. You can lose yourself so easily this way. So many people have said it before I have hundreds of friends on facebook yet I am so alone. This is exactly what a device like your cell phone can do to you. Don't let the phone rule your life use it to aid your activities, not to rule them.
3) In the older days, before cell phones, people were always on time. Why? Because they had no option but to be on time. There was no way to contact the person waiting for them to let them know they would be late so people just weren't late. The person waiting at a coffee shop didn't have a phone with them, you didn't have a phone with you between home and the coffee shop you just had to respect the time you had set and stick to it. These days it is all too easy to become tardy and then send a quick sms to say "running 15minutes late" without considering that the person waiting for you might have another appointment lined up.
