Location
Pune International Airport is 10kms away from Pune in the state of Maharashtra in India. Depending on traffic conditions it usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes by car to the airport from Pune.
Size
Pune International airport is a small airport, which covers an area of 14.36 acres. Its runway is 2,600 metres long.
History
Managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Pune International Airport was granted international status in 2005 after Air India commenced flights to Dubai and Singapore.
The runway at the airport is shared with the Indian Air Force, there have previously been some disagreements between the AAI and the air-force regarding flight schedules and landings at night. However The Indian Air Force are now allowing civilian flights to land at night.
Safety Record
Pune International Airport has had two accidents from flights from the airport. The first was on the 4th August 1979 when an Air India flight crashed into hills close to the airport. On the 23rd September 1989 a Vayudoot flight from Pune to Hydrabad crashed into a lake. There have not been any accidents at the airport itself.
Flights
There are approximately 38 scheduled flights every day to all the major Indian cities and international flights go to Singapore, Dubai and Frankfurt. The operators at the airport include, Air India, Lufthansa, Jet Airways, Go Air, Indian Airlines, Spicejet Kingfisher Airlines, Jetlite and IndiGo. Air India offers flights to Dubai and Singapore and Lufthansa offers flights to Frankfurt.
Hotels
Passengers with an early morning flight may wish to check into one of the hotels in Pune Airport close by the airport. Five star hotels include the Hotel Blue Diamond, Hotel Blue Sagar Plaza, The Sun N Sand and Hotel Regency. The Hotel Suyash or the Central Park hotel offer cheap and comfortable rooms.
Renovation
The current terminal at Pune International Airport can only contain 550 passengers at any one time so the AAI is building new terminals at the airport. Once the work is complete the airport will be able to contain over 2,100 passengers. The terminals will be built to comply with international standards. The runway is being extended from 2,600 metres to 3,250 metres and once this is complete the airport will be able to handle bigger aircraft. There is also a proposal for an instrument Landing System (ILS), this will make sure that there are always smooth landings and take-offs especially when the weather is bad.
Transport to and from airport
Pre-paid taxi and auto rickshaw services are available to take passengers to and from the airport. There is also a coach service, which goes to Pune and there is the option of renting a car from a car rental service at the airport.
Proposal for a new international airport
There is a proposal for a new International airport for pune. This will be spread over an area of 6338 acres and will have two runways. The construction of the airport is expected to commence in 2011 and once complete will give Pune more international flights and a faster movement of exports to international markets. The current location for the airport currently being considered is the area between Chakan and Rajgurunagar along the Pune Nashik National Highway. This location is 40kms from Pune.
