Butch Harmon was as surprised as anyone to see his former pupil, Tiger Woods, hit two such poor tee shots at the Cadillac Championship on Friday.
The two shots, a snap hook and a pop-up 3-wood that, combined, traveled less than 300 yards, suggest that the former world number one isn't quite as ready to stage an amazing TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putter as some might think.
Harmon, who is working as an analyst for Sky Sports at Doral, appeared in the NBC sports booth on Saturday, and discussed his views on the errant drives.
"I think the drive at the second hole and the 14th hole yesterday were a shock to all of us," Harmon said. "This is Tiger Woods, this isn't somebody on the Nationwide Tour that's trying to get a card. It's the greatest player that ever lived. I think it just shows you that he is still a work in progress. He has said that he and [coach] Sean Foley are still working on it."
Woods worked with new swing coach Sean Foley for the entire off-season, but as yet the hard work hasn't really paid off. Prior to his performance this week, where he sits 11 shots off the pace TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putterinto the final round, he also lost in the first round of the Accenture Matchplay Championship two weeks ago.
"This is seven months into it -- they started in August of last year at the PGA [Championship]," Harmon said. "But I think if I am Tiger Woods, I am a little frustrated that I don't see the consistency that I am looking for."
Aside from his troubles off the tee, Woods has struggled with his putting too, though his iron play has stayed on song. His performance this week even prompted him to change putters prior to the start of the third round on Saturday, as he ditched the Scotty Cameron model he used to win 13 majors and dozens of other PGA Tour victories.
Woods will participate in the Tavistock Cup on Monday and Tuesday, being played TaylorMade Rossa Corza Ghost Putter at Wood's home course outside Orlando, Isleworth, and Harmon believes the matches could offer a lot of insight.
