How To Be Environmentally Conscious When Travelling

Travelling to new lands and unfamiliar environments can be awe-inspiring and sometimes even amazing, life-changing experiences. But are you doing your part for the environment when YOU travel? Are you really 'treading light' on the earth? If you're currently not, here's 10 ways you can start right now:

1. Buy larger sized water bottles or containers. When you need to buy water, purchase larger (2-10 litre) containers if convenient. Saves buying multiple smaller sizes that get discarded. Put your plastics into recycling bins when you can. Even better, bring your own drinking water container.

2. Use glass rather than plastic. When ordering juices, shakes, smoothies and ice cool coffees (etc) ask to be served in a glass (and drink inside the shop) rather than take away plastic containers (that often come with a plastic bag).

3. Eat in rather than take away. Instead of buying food in take away polystyrene foam wrapped in a plastic bag, eat in at the cafe or restaurant, and use their plates and dishes provided.

4. Bring your own material carry bag. Great for vegetables, shopping purchases and anything else that otherwise ends up in a plastic bag. It's easy to say no to that extra plastic bag too!

5. Use a handkerchief (low cost and last for years) instead of paper napkins, tissues or paper towels.

6. Bring environmentally safe washing powder with you for washing clothes (etc). Just don't let customs mistake it for something else!

7. Hire a bicycle for a day or two to get around and explore. It's a slower, more interesting trip, you get to see and hear more things and it's delightful to do with a group of friends!

8. Choose environmentally aware tours and trips (when it's convenient) and they're available - or make a point to ask for them.

9. Watch the locals - what do they wear in the sun? Instead of always using sunscreen, add a lightweight long sleeve shirt and hat to your daily wear.

10. Carry any rubbish out with you. Make a point to leave your environment better than when you got there. Be aware of what packaging you are buying for food and other needs. Can you purchase it without wrapping or packaging?

I know it's not always easy to be environmentally aware when you're travelling. But even doing little things can make a huge difference sometimes. It all starts with you, so the more aware you are about your impact on this planet, the better!
