If you've actually experienced bus travel in Thailand then you may relate to the feeling of being strapped inside a fridge travelling at high speed with speakers blasting unfamiliar sounds right in your direction. Of course, not ALL bus travel in Thailand is like that. But it does happen, so here's 10 things you can do to prepare for that scenario, just in case:
1. Find an English speaker at your bus station so you're CLEAR about all details, your actual destination, where you stop, departure times and so on.
2. Bring suitable clothing - it can get cold inside the bus. Kind of like travelling inside a large (and rather comfortable) moving fridge!
3. Make sure you're early. Generally the (tour) buses that I know about leave EXACTLY on schedule, at the time listed on the bus timetable. Mini-vans are another story - they leave when full, even if that's hours away.
4. Make sure your bus has a toilet (for long trips). The toilets on some tour buses can be cramped spaces you'd need a confined spaces permit to crawl into. But it's essential - the bus won't stop just for you if you need to go.
5. Earplugs can be handy (or noise cancelling headphones). If Thai comedy is on the TV channel then expect it to be loud - REALLY loud!
6. Bring light food or nibbles (or a drink) if you find yourself getting uncomfortably hungry on long trips.
7. Prepare for night travel (long trips). You mightn't think you need it in Thailand but a hat you can pull down over your eyes, jacket and neck pillow make it easier to sleep on overnight bus journeys.
8. Travel safely. It goes without saying but don't leave small belongings lying about to tempt anyone.
9. Book ahead if an important trip. You normally can purchase an open ticket for travel at anytime at most bus stations. If in doubt, ask and the Thais will help you out.
10. Enjoy the journey. Be friendly and considerate. And remember, a smile will get you everywhere in Thailand!
There's 10 things that should help you out before you jump on a tour bus for another fun 12 hour journey. The main thing to keep in mind is that if you're unsure about something, just ask. (You may need to ask different people until you get the answer you want!) It's better to be clear than end up on a bus going in the wrong direction!
