The legends of magic carpets were experiencing a bit of a Walt Disney's Aladdin lead renaissance when I was a kid. I remember being so intoxicated by the power of these normal household items. They were your key to international travel, not to mention the hearts of princesses everywhere. I was pretty sure in my youth that magic carpets were the future of transportation.I know better now, and yet the right carpet seems no less magical to me. When I see a friend or family member willing to carpet Brooklyn living spaces, with all of the potential for damage inherent in people walking around what can occasionally be a fairly filthy city, I am just as impressed as I would be to see a magician pull a rabbit out of a hat. As you grow up if your perception allows for it, what astounds one in a "magical" way can become more practical. A "magic" carpet doesn't even have to look like the ones in the movie Aladdin, which was really more of a karastan area rug than a "carpet." In fact it sometimes can seem like magic how full on karastan carpeting wall to wall can tie a room together. Sure its bulky size will make it hard to roll out onto the roof for flight, but isn't a well laid out room just as magical as soaring around the world? I certainly think so.When I was a kid I remember at the store my father was a manager of there was an area rug I used to love to play on. Commercial area rugs are honestly the most officially "magic carpet"-like rugs most of us bump into day to day. For me playing on that rug was heaven. Obviously we had to wait for a lull in the business day so that my imagination wasn't standing in the way of commerce, but when I got the chance I ate it up!Look may be you have to be a little nuts to think of commercial carpetting as magical. Then again, maybe you don't know how to find passion in things that are real. It would be pretty miserable to go through life just accepting that things are what they are and there is no deeper resonance to them. For me when I'm standing on a commercial rug my imagination is running wild and honestly it truly can be magical. Because what is more magical than for a brief moment recapturing that child like glee, if for just a moment.
