Laparoscopic Surgery & Its Understanding

Laparoscopy is a type of surgery which is done by small incision into the abdominal with the help of a camera. This can be either used to diagnose the condition and perform the surgery. The instrument that is used for laparoscopy surgery is called laparoscope.

Laparoscopy surgery is also called keyhole surgery. It is an endoscopic procedure which is performed as a part of investigation for abdominal and pelvic cavity.

Laparoscopy was earlier used by gynecologist to diagnose the diseases of ovary and uterus. These days fibreoptic instruments and cameras allow procedures on the smallest structure and laparoscopy has extended surgical procedures which includes repair of hiatal hernias, appendix, colon, and uterus.

Below are some of the most commonly diagnosed illness that are treated through laparoscopy:

1) Female Reproductive System This allows doctors to investigate problems like pelvic floors, vaginal prolapse. Sometimes it can also be used to determine the abnormalities in the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus.

2) Cancers Laparoscopy can also diagnose pancreas and liver cancers and it further helps in the treatment of the same.

3) Diseases of Urinary Systems As laparoscopy is used to diagnose many diseases and help in the treatment of them, it is also useful to treat malignant and non-malignant conditions of kidney, blockages of urethra and incontinence.

4) Removal of Diseased Organs This procedures of laparoscopy helps in treatment and repairing gall bladders with stones and removal of appendix including hernias.

Any laparoscopy treatment is performed by giving local and general anesthesia depending on nature of the problem. The laparoscopy treatment is performed with the help of an instrument called laparoscope, it is thin tube containing a light source on its tip and fiber optic lens which transmits the video in real time so that the doctor and its team can see them in real time.

Rather than making big cuts, surgeon can insert thin instruments from sides which helps in the operation of the patient. The laparoscope can move around in the cavity and allows the doctor to see many views of the organ.

There are many advantages for the laparoscopy surgery as it minimizes the blood loss which happens during the operation. Other advantages that laparoscopy provides is the post operative shorter period with less pain. The avoidance of large incision also decreases the complication related to heart and lungs after the post-operation.

Many people need to undergo surgery to remove their uterus, correcting colon problems or for any other reason, it is always better to have laparoscopy surgery rather than traditional surgery. Laparoscopy surgery is recommended as it is faster and is more efficient and it also requires less downtime than any traditional surgery.

Whenever you opt for laparoscopy you should inform your doctor about it as there are some pre-operative precaution and things that the patient has to follow. You have to inform about all the medication that you are taking as some may lead to complication after the procedure. It is better to present both the prescribed and non-prescribed drugs to your doctor.
