Why Become Vegetarian?
Why Become Vegetarian?

Vegetarianism seems to be "all the rage". To some people it may even seem like the "thing to do" if they have friends that are vegetarians. Some vegetarians are upset over the treatment of animals and feel the need to give up meat in support of the animals. Others eat no meat to be healthy. Still others have certain religious beliefs that prevent them form eating meat. Before even considering vegetarianism, it is important to decide which type you want to be and why. There are many different types of vegetarians from those people who eat only chicken and fish with no red meat, to those who eat no meat at all of any kind. Some don't even eat any animal by products, such as eggs or milk. Whatever you decide, it is necessary that you understand what to eat. Meals should be planned carefully so they include as many of the necessary nutrients to remain healthy. Sometimes additional supplements must be taken to obtain the right amounts.

Many vegetarians may be lacking B12 in their diets without meat. This is something often

gotten from animals. It is also extremely important to make sure you are receiving the

correct amount of protein in your diet. Other minerals that can sometimes be deficient in a

vegan diet are zinc, calcium and iron. Without the proper amounts of some of these nutrients, you can become sick or feel weak and tired.

A well constructed vegetarian diet which contains some animal protein and fat is better than the standard American diet which is high in refined sugars and poor quality fats. If you are thinking about becoming a vegetarian, you must decide if you can really be satisfied eating a vegetarian diet. Although there are many types of Vegetarians, a true Vegan eats no meat or meat by products such as eggs or milk. That is why there are so many variations of vegetarianism. Only you can decide how far you want to go and how much you want to give up and why. It is important to educate yourself as much as possible.
