"Shutter bugs" are getting busier more than ever lately with the thousands of picture contests emerging every day on the Internet. The picture contests are where photographers from all over the world compete with their captured moments in a digital format that they can submit to any website in seconds after taking it.
Picture contests are not only for professional photographers, but with the level of competition some professional work might not be artistic enough to capture the attention of the judges.
There are contests where you can submit edited pictures, which is a good opportunity for you to use your artistic photo-editing skills to produce a fine piece of art. But some contests, like the cute kid contest, require that you submit the raw picture because they are interested in the baby model not in the photographers skills.
Some picture contests specialize in a certain line of photography, like black-and-while pictures. Some others are specialized in situations, like "on the wall" or "under the rain" pictures. It could even get more out of norms and specialize in hands, tails, or wings.
Usually such contests are run by companies or organizations that need pictures for their publishing, web design, modeling, or advertising. By submitting your picture you give the organizers the right to use your work for their own purposes. Sometimes you get paid for that, but most of the time you are the one to pay for participating in the contest.
The contestant pictures are usually judged by a committee of photographers and/or specialists in the purpose of the contest. For example, a baby photo contest is judged by baby modeling experts because they are after the baby model more than the photographic skills of the participants.
Prizes vary widely from a title and/or a trophy all the way to a large check. Prizes money is usually collected from the participation fees, but when there is no such fees the prize could be either a small amount of money or a gift that has an honorable value rather than a materialistic one, like a magazine or membership site subscription.
