Once a month cooking can be an overwhelming process that takes so long that it doesn't seem like it's even worth it. When I used to cook for the month, I would start cooking on Saturday morning and I would be on my feet all day long. I went to bed with my back and feet hurting from overexerting myself. And I would have to continue cooking Sunday morning in pain. After a couple of years of doing this, I finally came up with a system that doesn't require a lot of effort or time.
Problem 1) It takes too long to prepare
To fix this problem, divide the prep session into 3 sections. First section is to mix all dry ingredients for each recipe and place them in separate containers. The next section is to cut fruits and vegetables and place them in the bowl of the respective recipe. Cutting all meat is the last section. Multi tasking is not your friend in this area. You want to concentrate on each section only, so that it gets done faster. One exception is while the food is cooling, this is a great time to label small stackable Tupperware or gallon bags.
Problem 2) It takes too long to cook
To solve this problem, apply heat after everything is prepared and share baking time. Put multiple items in the oven and on the stovetop range at the same time. Also, know the cooking time of each recipe is helpful.
Problem 3) It takes too long to clean up
Once a month cooking is a team sport. Get someone else to be the designated dishwasher and counter wiper. Since this is their only job, it takes the pressure off of you to cook and clean. Also, keeping a trash bowl near the cutting bowl during the cutting part of the day for the cleaner will help with their job.
By taking the time to plan, section tasks, and getting someone else to clean, your cooking day will speed up and your anxiety will slow down. Now, my cooking day is just as productive, and much more enjoyable.
