Himalayan Zoological Park
Himalayan Zoological Park

Sprawled across 204 hectares of stunning mountainous terrain of North Eastern India, the Himalayan Zoological Park is located at an altitude of 5,840 feet from sea level offering its visitors an amazing view of the majestic Mt. Khangchendzonga. This is the ideal place for those wildlife lovers visiting the Sikkim area, especially as wildlife can be viewed in their own habitats, preserving the natural beauty of the area. The Zoo is located about 3 km from the city of Gangtok in an area known as Bulbuley. The park was initiated in the year 1991 and it was the first attempt at establishing a park which boasts animals in their natural habitats in this region of the country. The concept used here is rather modern. Whilst most of the park still remains intact in its natural state, animals are kept in areas which have been replicated to match their natural surroundings. The forest area of the Zoo is home to Blue Sheep, Himalaya Black Bear, Musk Deer, Red Panda and Barking Deer. Visitors can explore the forest for views of the animals whilst remaining in the safety of the walking areas. A specially designed pavement runs through open-air enclosures. Hedges separate the pavements from the enclosures which are home to various animals of the region including Himalayan Palm Civet, Tibetan Wolf, Leopard Cat, Goral Spotted Deer and the Common Langur. Since these animals reside in a natural habitat sometimes it is not that easy to spot them. Visitors are encouraged to be patient and observant in order to view the animals. The best times of the year for spotting animals are mid February to May and again mid September to December. Visitors to Sikkim will be greeted by amazing natural wonders as well as by warm Asian hospitality. Travellers looking for lodging options in the area can easily find many options through the Internet. Sikkim hotels range from luxury to budget but all options feature modern amenities. For a hotel in Sikkim with all possible luxuries blended with the scenic beauty of the region try the Retreat by Zuri Baiguney, Sikkim. Located alongside the River Rangit the Retreat is spread across 12 acres of lush green affording its guests the luxury of serenity.
