Content Management Systems - Do I Really Need One?

Ok, so you've made the decision to get a website, you might even have a good idea who is going to do it for you. But once you've got your site how do you make sure that it's up to date, do you even NEED to update it?

Well, the first answer is a resounding yes, you DO need to be able to update your site. Every business runs special offers, wants to promote new products etc. You might want to advertise for new staff, perhaps move office or set up new eMail addresses as you expand. All of these will require your site to be updated.

So how will this happen. Am I going to have to learn html, php or some other language or, worse still, do I need to employ a new I.T. person adding to the overall expense!

Certainly if you have a site WITHOUT a CMS you will probably have to contact the original site designer and ask them to do it for you. Assuming you are still in contact with them that is. They will charge for this and hopefully eventually get around to doing it for you.

However, the good news is that it's almost certainly much easier than you think.

Ensure from the start that YOU are in control by making sure that YOUR site (don't forget, it IS YOUR site) comes with an easy to use "Content Management System" that enables you to update the content, add new pages, new images and links etc WHENEVER YOU WISH.

Make sure that the CMS you are sold with the site makes sense to you. There are some truly awful CMS offerings around that even an I.T. geek will struggle with!

But with a good CMS there is no extra expense for each update, the interface will be intuitive, the initial training included in the website build price and from then on you will have FULL CONTROL over the content of your website, your online window to the world.
