Microbial fortune at the bottom of ecological pyramid

When the assertion of the fortune at the bottom of pyramid' was made by C K Prahalad and Stuart Hard in 2002, many MNC's realized the new business prospect hidden underneath the pyramid and their pricing strategy especially for the poor.

aspiration of the people at the bottom of the pyramid is as high as the affluent class and a huge space is there for new market.

This is all about business and marketing. In the ecological pyramid, the biomass is arranged in different trophic levels. Among various trophic levels, the biomass of primary producers is very high when compared to primary or secondary consumers.

Realizing the fortune at the bottom of the pyramid the primary producers, many countries grown as strong agricultural countries over the years.

The most striking fortune hidden at the bottom of the ecological pyramid is the microbes'. Utility of microbes, the fortune at the bottom of the pyramid is unfortunately not yet fully realized. Microbes are real fortune to man and his ecosystem. They play the role of creation, facilitation and destruction & decomposition. The creation role of microbes includes the protein, vitamin and antibiotic synthesis, the fermentation, providing taste etc., In the case of facilitation role, microbes mostly facilitate the yield by fixing the N2, being formed as normal flora etc., Obviously, the destruction role of microbes need not explanation. Besides all, microbes also do the role of decomposition. If there is no decomposition, neither creation nor the facilitation would occur the planet earth would have been a garbage' in the universe said Dr.Gokulshankar.

Microbiology students should realize the microbe fortune lies in the bottom of the ecological pyramid and they need to go further deep into it than just studying microbiology at undergraduate or post graduate level. Microbes can be the best resource and raw material for starting an industry. Even developing a suitable microbe mix for decomposition purpose of bio and non bio waste in the world itself can become a great business opportunity.

Microbes are simple, single celled organism, easy to culture and micro manipulate. Microbiologists should realize the scope very fast said Dr.Ranjith Mahenderkar, teaching faculty of Medicine, AIMST Univeristy.

Dr Gokulshankar, another eminent microbiologist par excellence, teaching faculty of Medicine, AIMST University said no wonder why Pasteur has stated that germ is life'.
