We all need to buy new sheet sets every now and then or when the need arises. If you buy a new bed you should definitely get sheets that would match it. Customers will usually find sets in various sizes to match different sized beds. When you buy a set it will include a fitted sheet, pillow cases, and a flat sheet.
The Stuff in the Package
Some people get perplexed when they see that extra sheet when they buy a new set from the store. The pillow cases of course will be used for the pillows. Obviously, the large fitted sheet is for the bed, but some people get baffled by the presence of an extra sheet along with the rest of the items in the set.
To clear things up we should define what a flat sheet is and what it is for. This type of bed sheet is otherwise known as a top sheet. You get to put it on the bed after you're done getting the fitted sheet ready on the bed. You usually place this sheet on top of the fitted sheet. It is then tucked just around the sides of the mattress as well as at the bottom.
Like the fitted sheet, it also covers the sheet that is directly on the mattress. This is basically where the names of the sheets are derived. Thus the flat sheet is also referred to as the top sheet while the fitted sheets are called the bottom sheets. Figuring out which is which in the sheet set is pretty obvious.
The top sheet is nothing more than the rectangular shaped sheet of cloth that comes with the rest of the items in the package. On the other hand, the fitted sheet has its four corners that fit into the corners of the bed. This keeps the fitted bed sheet from slipping from the mattress.
Like the fitted bed sheets that come with your package, top sheets also come in a variety of sizes to match different sized beds. Twin sized top sheets are 66" x 96" or 167cm x 243cm. Extra-long sizes are 66" x 102" or about 167cm x 259cm. Full sizes are 81" by 96" or 205cm x 243cm. Queen Size sheets have dimensions as 90" x 102" or 228cm x 259cm. King Size top sheets are 108" x 102" or 274cm x 259cm.
Tips
Remember that when you purchase a twin set, you usually will just get one pillow case. Other sizes will usually come with two pillow cases in the package. Be sure to check the pocket size when you buy a sheet set. The pocket size should accommodate the depth of your mattress.
