First, a couple quick definitions. It is our goal as Internet Marketers to align consumers with products. We receive two types of commissions in Internet Marketing, Commission Per Sale (CPS) and Commission Per Action (CPA). Commission Per Sale is a simple concept, for every item you sell you are paid a predetermined commission. Often times commission schedules are structured such that the more you sell to more commission you are paid. The second concept is Commission Per Action, which pays the Internet Marketer for each action a person performs. The types of actions can vary from clicking a link, to filling out a survey. One of the major advantages CPS has over CPA is the commissions paid for each sale are usually greater. That is not to say that Click Per Action marketing does not have extremely high earning potential, because it does, however, it requires a greater volume of traffic. Personally I prefer Commission Per Sale methods.
The single most important investment you can make is a website. A website allows you to have a landing page and direct your traffic where you want it. Also many sites will not allow direct affiliate links forcing you to direct traffic to another site before your affiliate link. Finally, a web page that constantly has new traffic coming to it will always rank higher in the search engines. Google and Yahoo like new content.
An important part of your website is your domain. Owning your own domain also carries with it several benefits. First, picking a keyword rich domain will help you rank higher in search engine rankings. Second, owning your own domain will allow you to hide your affiliate links with URL redirects allowing you to protect your affiliate links. Finally, purchasing a domain allows you to have your own e-mail addresses.
Once you have your own domain and e-mail address you open yourself up to the potential for e-mail marketing campaigns. I hate to say it, but the reason SPAM (Something Pretending As Mail) is so prevalent is it works. I am definitely not recommending you add SPAMing to your bag of tricks; it is possible to run entirely legitimate e-mail campaigns without flooding the world with SPAM. Not to mention, SPAMing is one of the quickest ways to get your domain blacklisted and kill your traffic. Personally I recommend AWeber to manage and automate your e-mail marketing campaigns.
These strategies for making money all have the end goal of generating traffic. Traffic = Clicks = Money. Internet Marketing is one of the best student jobs because it allows the student the flexibility to work on his or her schedule while still earning a significant income.
