India Gate A tribute to the brave at heart

India Gate is one of the nation's most significant monuments, built to commemorate the bravery of thousands of soldiers that gave up their lives during India's historical war periods. This splendid arched memorial reaches a majestic height of 42 meters. It stands as a tribute to the 90,000 soldiers who died whilst fighting for the British Raj in World War I and those who lost their lives during the Anglo-Afghan War in 1919. The memorial is also recognized as the site of the Amar Jawan Jyoti, which when translated means the flame of the immortal soldier'. This shrine was built in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the India-Pakistan War in 1971.

Designed by Edward Lutyens, the India Gate is constructed out of granite and red sandstone. The foundation stone for the Gate was placed by the Duke of Connaught in 1921 and the structure was dedicated to the nation 10 years later. Situated in Rajpath, the memorial stands in a central location as many significant roads converge at this point in New Delhi. The names of the soldiers' who lost their lives in World War I and the Anglo-Afghan War are inscribed along the stony exterior of the monument. The Amar Jawan Jyoti which is represented by a cenotaph of black marble with an ever burning flame lies under the arch of the India Gate.

The India Gate looks best at night when its entire structure is beautifully lit against the velvety night sky. The Gate itself is surrounded by lush green lawns that come alive with much noise and excitement as darkness closes in across the city. Families and couples visit the memorial to relax and have fun together. You can enjoy tasty snacks and local delicacies such as bhelpuri (puffed rice with hot, sweet and spicy sauces) and fruit chaat (fruit salad with a spicy sauce) that are sold by numerous food vendors in the vicinity. Many come equipped with a pack of cards to play with or a ball to throw around for entertainment. Various interesting activities such as camel rides and monkey shows are also on offer here.
