Nowadays there are a variety of geology scholarships and grants available. Students who intend to pursue a career in one of the geological sciences qualify. Grants, available to both undergraduate and graduate students, cover research, field camp and general tuition. A number of associations, foundations, and organizations across the USA offer scholarships and grants specific to geology majors.
Geological Society of America
The Geological Society of America awards research grants to graduate students in the geological sciences. Applicants must be GSA members and enrolled in a North or Central American university. The Subaru Minority Student Scholarship Program awards undergraduate minority students pursuing a degree in each of the GSA regional sections. Three of the six GSA regions (northeastern, south central and southeastern) award scholarships to undergraduates. Division grants are awarded in specific disciplines like planetary geology, coal geology and geobiology.
Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute
The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute awards scholarships to full-time junior and senior students pursuing a career in engineering or mining-related industries. The institute selects one student from each of the RMCMI states: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, North Dakota, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. There are 2 types of scholarships:
The civil engineering/geology scholarships are for $2,500 and renewable for up to 2 years;
The technical scholarship is a $1,000 one-time gift for students who hope to apply their education in the coal industry.
Each scholarship program includes 8 awards. In addition to completing an online application, students must undergo interviews when applying for a scholarship.
University of Southern Indiana
The University of Southern Indiana offers 8 scholarships to students demonstrating high levels of academic excellence. Applications, open to high school students applying to college for the first time, geology majors and earth-science teaching majors are reviewed by faculty.
Five scholarships, given in honor of Walter F. Sill, go to students showing academic achievements in geology, to a student showing promise who wishes to study geology and to a student attending geology field camp.
The Indiana Oil and Gas Association (INOGA)
The Indiana Oil and Gas Association (INOGA) offers 1 scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to an incoming student planning to major in geology, or a currently enrolled student switching to a geology major. Students must be enrolled at the University of Southern Indiana to apply.
Lake Superior State University
Lake Superior State University geology students have several options for scholarships. Award amounts for these scholarships differ, depending on funding availability.
Here are scholarships offered by the Lake Superior State University:
C. Ernest Kemp Endowed Scholarship a merit-based scholarship awarded to a high school senior who is admitted to the university's geology program.
Leonard Payne Geology Scholarship a scholarship awarded to geology majors with a minimum grade point average of 3.2.
Eastern Washington University
Eastern Washington University offers 4 geology scholarships through the Department of Geology:
The Weissenborn Geology Scholarship is awarded to senior level students majoring in geology.
The Rock Rollers Geology Scholarship awards selected Inland Empire residents to help pay for the spring field camp, or to use towards tuition.
The Rennebohm Geology Scholarship and the Felix E. Mutschler Memorial Scholarship are awarded to lower classmen majoring in geology.
National Association of Geoscience Teachers
The National Association of Geoscience Teachers awards $500 scholarships to students for field study. In addition, NAGT awards $750 grants to two-year college faculty members and secondary school teachers to attend scientific meetings, purchase classroom materials and take workshops.
