BMX bikes have taken off in popularity in recent years due to intensity and skill needed to properly perform tricks or participate in a motocross race. The term "BMX" was originally intended to represent the "BMX racing" that too place using the small, yet agile style of bicycle. The unique look of the BMX bike as well as its signature style smaller tires have made it a popular choice for enthusiasts and thrill seekers alike. Many people have even adopted the style of bicycle when choosing a vehicle to commute to school and work.
Short History
The first sign of BMX bicycles came in the 1970s when kids began holding races on dirt tracks in Southern California. The most popular model at the time was the Schwinn Sting-Ray because it could be customized by the user for better handling during races and the company had been known for years to provide excellent and durable products. BMXs and the sport did not explode on the scene till 1972, when a racing documentary ("On Any Given Sunday") using the smaller bike appeared and had a profound effect on youth and young adults all over the United States. The documentary followed kids as they rode their Schwinn Sting-Ray bicycles off-road in a series of races. The high-paced, adrenaline-pumping sport left Americans wanting to know more about the activity and get involved. More importantly, the documentary spawned the beginning of manufacturers designing and selling bicycles specifically for the sport. A whole generation of youth pushed aside baseball mitts and basketballs, in favor of an undersized bicycle. Parents were left scratching their heads, trying to figure out what the draw was to this sport. The sport has also had a part in developing a distinct subculture of tattooed, extreme sport athletes, laying it all out on the track and has given BMX athletes a reputation for have a wild side that not many other athletes possess. Despite this image, the sport remains clean and is good fun and exercise for youth. Nowadays the sport has taken off so much that you can even see it on networks like Fuel TV.
