Security guards; a misconception
Ask anybody what picture comes to mind when you say security guard and 90% of the time it will be an overweight, middle aged man sitting in a guard shack eating donuts at 3am. Unfortunately this stereotypical view is all too prevalent in today's society. Most people are unaware of the intense training programs that the modern security guard has to undergo, along with an extensive background check and regular drug testing. Long gone are the days when to qualify you simply needed to fit into the uniform.
Today's modern security guards are highly trained officers that can cope with all manner of incidents on both residential and commercial properties. These areas include;
Firearms
Baton and mace
Arrest and detention procedures
Observation
Paperwork and report writing
Public relations
Police liaison
All security companies can now provide a highly skilled officer who can effectively deal with any situation that may arise. From giving directions, to assisting the police with a full blown on site operation.
However, the responsibilities for public safety do not end at the end of the guard's working day. As an ex-security guard myself, I found myself constantly checking for potential problems even when not on duty. Then having the confidence in my training to know what to do if a situation occurred.
The job of the security guard is not suited to all. It takes hard work and dedication to reach the goals needed to become the candidate most security companies are looking for. Background checks and drug tests are mandatory as is a clean driver's license and criminal record. However the biggest asset is a drive to succeed. Having the willingness to get up at 3am to start a shift (or finish one) these are the things that make today's security guards the best at what they do.
So the next time you see a guard at a local shopping mall or even at your condo complex. Take the time to thank him or her for what they do. It goes a long way to maintaining good public relations and gives them a sense of appreciation that makes them proud to serve.
