Introduction
If you know what a "Wall In" is in Starcraft 2 ,you need to know that a contain is the opposite of that .
Is the practice of walling your enemy inside his ramp,basically disabling his expansion capabilities while giving yourself full map control.
It also forces your enemy to engage your blockade and damage his game even further as you will have increased firepower and positioning over his units.
Race Specific Setup
Terran
Bunker contains are very popular for Terrans as they are very hard to break early in the game.After you place your bunkers outside his ramp you can add to it high HP buildings make it even more durable.
Siege Tank contains are also a great way to block him in.You need to back up your tanks with missile turrets later on to counter air/stealth units.
Protoss
Photon Cannon contains are very common for this race tough it requires good timing much like the Cannon Cheese.
Sentries can and will make for a very good blockade against any race with their Force Field spell
Zerg
Not many options for this race except for spine crawlers. To set this up you must rely on a proxy hatchery near his ramp,or spread creep tumor using an Overlord.
How to Counter A Contain
If your opponent tries to contain you,it is a good idea to avoid a direct assault on his blockade.
Contains are set up from the start to create a concave arround your choke point,leaving your units open to fire while they get in position.
Alternatives like Medivacs,Warp Prisms or Nydus Worms are the best ways to counter this .
Of course you can always use stealth to get past it if he is lacking any dettection.Here units like Dark Templars,banshee,Roaches(burrowed) or Infestors can save the game for you.
Once you do get out,you can easily turn the tables on him by assaulting his main base and going straight for his probes/scv's/drones.
If he is smart enough he will retreat his blockade to counter your push,if not then its GG for you.
