Things to look at when selecting an accountants:
1. Are they specialist? If you are a contractor ensure that you select an accounting firm that specialise in contractor accounting services. This is important because they will be able to advice you on regulations and legislations that specifically apply to contract, freelance and temporary workers. An example legislation that they will be able to advise you on is IR35; a legislation that determines whether you have the right to take dividends or not (that's a whole new topic).
Are they accredited? As a director of your own Limited Company you are ultimately responsible for ensuring that it is run correctly. If for example you signed up to a
2. contractor accounting services which were not accredited and did not maintain your accounts correctly, you would be ultimately responsible for paying back any tax liabilities and in certain cases penalties. Some accreditation to look for are; CIMA, AAT & ACCA. If the hold any of these accreditations, you have peace of mind that they are regulated and will maintain your accounts compliantly.
3. Do they offer tailored accounting services? The reason I've included this for consideration is because contractors tend to have different preferences when it comes to service levels i.e. you may want to administer some of your companies bookkeeping to gain some more experience into running your business, or you may want your accountant to handle absolutely everything for you.
4. Will they provide best advice? You want a dedicated client manager who you can speak to when you have a query and you want best advice tailored to your individual needs (who doesn't). The fact of the matter is, there are many contractor accounting firms that do not provide best advice for you and they only offer reactive service rather than proactive service. When selecting a contractor accounting service make sure that you read up on the service level agreements that they have in place.
