Ford India sales numbers have seen a boost since the launch of the hatchback Figo in the Indian market. However, according to January sales figures the company has not been able to sell a single unit of the Ford Ikon. The sedan has been around for 12 years and it feels like the company might finally be deciding on discontinuing it. After the implementation of the Bharat IV norms in April last year the company had discontinued the model from the 13 cities where the norms were applicable. Now the dealers have stopped keeping stock of the Ikon model as numbers have started to dip.
The successful sedan was initially offered in three engine variants two petrol and one diesel. The 1.7-litre diesel and 1.6-litre Rocam petrol engines were discontinued in 2005. The company sold its 1.3-litre Rocam model in BS-III cities and the 1.3-litre push-rod petrol model in BS-II cities. The diesel motor Ikon TDCi same as that in the Fiesta and Figo was re introduced in 2008.
Apart from the Ikon discontinuation Ford is likely to launch the new Fiesta saloon in coming three months. The car is likely to have a new 1.6-litre petrol engine capable of generating 110 bhp and a 1.6-litre diesel engine producing 90 bhp. The new Fiesta based on Ford's global kinetic design is bigger than the present Fiesta model. It will have a fresh dash and good-quality material used in the interiors. The car would also get a DSG-like dual-clutch automatic gearbox. But before the launch Ford is expected to slash the prices of the existing Fiesta model and rechristen it as the Fiesta Classic. The new Fiesta saloon is likely to be priced between Rs 7-9 lakh to compete with the likes of City, Vento, SX4 et al.
