The first posters were created in the mid 19th century in France as advertisement for new products. The use of posters has spread in less than ten years, from France to throughout the rest of the Europe. Since then, these are known the outstanding marketing tools. They are also used for promotional purposes for theater, and opera shows and major events.

Back in the days, the posters used for various activities were low in quality. Moreover, they had to face the problem of limited stock, as the printing techniques were not so advanced than of today's. In those days, posters were handmade and there, lots of efforts had to done to get a quality poster. The Father of poster', Jules Cheret, was the first to give importance to the poster as an artistic image. In 1867, he introduced new four-color lithographic process. With this, it became more easier to get highly stylized form of graphic art that thoroughly integrated text and image. Later on, the invention of the printing press allowed for the mass production of the posters of all shapes and sizes. By 1848, the process had been redefined to the point that it was possible to print 10,000 sheets per hour.

So far, the poster has come across a long way. The purpose served by a poster was the same as the purpose of today. But the printing technique, graphic art and other illustrations have changed their face to the point, as modern posters are totally different from their older counterparts..!
