subject: How to Start Bowling - The Right and Wrong Way to Learn How to Start Bowling! [print this page]

If you are reading this, you are looking into how to start bowling. That's wonderful! I do want to tell you though that there is a right and a wrong way to do this. Unfortunately, it is not a matter of just picking up a ball and instantly becoming a good bowler. While yes, it does START with picking up that bowling ball, there is actually a lot that goes into bowling than you may think.

I am going to cover some of the basics of bowling and how you can find some really good resources out there that will help you become a better bowler.

Basic Concept # 1

It is not about how hard you throw the ball versus how ACCURATE you through it! When people start learning how to start bowling, their first instinct is to throw the ball as fast and as hard as they can. This is actually the one thing you SHOULDN'T do! The more effort you put into whipping that ball down the lane, the less control and accuracy you have.

Do not sacrifice accuracy for power. I can promise you that it does not work!

Basic Concept # 2

If you can lift the ball comfortably, then use it! I see a lot of beginners that will grab an kiddie ball (6 pounder) because they can throw it harder. Guess what? You're actually doing yourself a disservice here. You are always going to be better off using a heavier ball because the weight of the ball is more likely to knock the pins down with more authority! It's called deflection. A lighter ball is more likely to "deflect" off the pins versus plow through them!

Basic Concept # 3

Learning how to start bowling is NOT HARD! There are quite a few people that want to learn bowling, but are afraid of looking silly or simply failing. Think about what bowling is - ten pins and one ball. That's it! It's a matter of practicing and being willing to make changes to your game as you see fit. Don't be afraid to try something new! You can do this!

When you make the decision to learn how to start bowling, you need to also make a decision to do it the right way. If not, you are actually doing yourself more harm than good!
