How to Recondition Dewalt Tool Batteries

Reconditioning your DeWalt tool batteries can make the difference between successfully completing a do-it-yourself project and quitting. When you overuse your power tools and don't check your batteries they can lose their power and require reconditioning. Reconditioning your batteries can save you a trip to your local hardware store.

1. Unscrew the screws on the case and set them aside in a safe spot. Open the DeWalt case with your fingers to take out the batteries.

2. Write down the connection pattern of the battery cells and then start to disassemble the battery pack.

3. Use a heated iron to remove the dead cells. The iron will also detach the lead that is holding the batteries together.

4. Arrange the new rechargeable batteries in the same pattern as the old DeWalt tool batteries. Use the iron to reconnect the lead of the batteries.

5. Place the new rechargeable batteries into the appropriate slots and then screw the DeWalt case back together.

6. Reopen the DeWalt case, remove the rechargeable batteries and place them on the battery charger for two to three hours to recharge them. The batteries will be as good as new.

Tips & Warnings

You can purchase the new batteries at an electronics store. First look up your tool's identification number and find out which batteries you need to purchase.

Recondition Batteries

1. Place your old batteries in the drill. Turn the drill on and let it run until it stops, which is when the batteries are completely drained. This is called discharging your battery. A battery that is not fully discharged will not be able to be properly reconditioned. Allow the batteries to rest for a few minutes. Turn the drill on; it may work briefly due to residual power in the batteries. Repeat until the drill will not work; the batteries are now fully discharged.

2. Plug the battery charger into an electrical outlet. Place the used batteries in the battery charger. Be sure to connect the negative side of the batteries with the negative marking on the battery charger. Do the same for the positive side of the batteries, making sure they are aligned with the positive marking on the battery charger.

3. Press the charge button on the battery charger. Allow the batteries to charge. The LED indicator will be green, signaling the batteries are fully charged. You may need to repeat the reconditioning process for some batteries a few times in order for them to be fully reconditioned.

4. Repeat this process once a month to maintain your batteries.
