Colorful parade of horse-drawn floats and 100s of brewery carriage laden with giant kegs rumble down the streets of Maximilian and Rasidenzstrasse.They are led by the hooded figure on city,s official coat of arms and followed by some 10,000 traditionally dressed practitioners from oompah bands,dance groups,shooting associations, and other Bavarian groups.Next come the innkeepers of the Oktoberfest beer tents-and they make their way down to festival grounds.This beer craze takes place on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest, after it has been opened at noon.The party officially starts when Munich's mayor taps the first keg of beer, yelling "It's tapped!!", and drinks to successful Oktoberfest.The locals join in with cheers and set about quenching their thirst, while millions watching on TV throughout Germany do the same.
The Oktoberfest is not for the faint-hearted,non-beer lovers,or vegetarians. With millions visitors per year, some 10 million pints of beer,half a million chickens,half a million sausages, this is a huge party for the world's biggest festival and lasts for full 16 days.Don't be late though;the Oktoberfest, despite its name starts in mid-September.The name harks back to the first Oktoberfest which was held in 1810 in honour of Prince Ludwig's marriage.
