The journey has been a long and turbulent one filled with great achievements and disappointments. My career goals have changed throughout my fifteen years of employment. However, the strongest felt career goal has not been tackled until only a few years ago.
My journey began fresh out of high school. While working a full-time office job, I decided a community college business course would be my next step. Completing my first year was no more exhilarating than watching a turtle travel toward his next destination. Following this attempt, my next step was a job at a local bank. A short-term goal I thought would only be a stepping stone turned out to be home for the next ten years. Leaving town to study a field I felt strongly compelled to was my new ambition. However, the news was not good. I would need to upgrade my high school sciences in order to attend University. My tender young age made me impatient and decided I did not want to wait a year and I let go of my dream.
The years seem to progress one into the next until I found myself married with two children and feeling unchallenged working in the accounting field. There had to be more for me. Something inside stirred when I thought of what I would do for the next 20-30 employable years. I thought, I am only in my thirties, what do I want to do?
A new career goal was set in motion. While working full-time I upgraded my sciences in 14 months. I have now completed my first year of the Bachelors program with a 4.0 average and I am patiently waiting to start my second year. My first year proved to be more fulfilling that I ever imagined.
Being a mature student has added challenges along the way. Adjusting to being in a classroom of teenagers, juggling family responsibilities and the under 30 years old summer placement funding qualifications have been only a few of the challenges along the way. Not all of the experiences have been positive, but all have been great learning experiences.About the Author:
